ablet sales showed their first sequential decline ever in the second quarter of this year, according to research firm IDC. Apple sold fewer iPads than expected in its most recent quarter. Barnes & Noble’s Nook e-reader sales fell 20% in the fiscal first quarter ended August 20, two months after the company announced it will no longer make color versions of Nook, only black and white ones. And analysts are worrying about whether smartphone profit margins can hold up as buyer fatigue sets in. All of this points to what is becoming the new normal for tech gadgets: a rapidly accelerating product cycle. Devices hit the market, wow the crowd, mature and sunset at an ever increasing rate. For instance, the netbook, a light, stripped-down laptop, was created in 2007, shortly peaked and then plummeted as consumers bought tablets. Research firm IHS iSuppli predicts that by 2015, netbooks will be extinct after hitting a peak of 32.14 million units in 2010. IDC said that worldwide tablet shipments were 45.1 million units, down 9.7% in the second quarter relative to the first quarter. Second quarter shipments were up 59.6% from a year ago, but the research firm noted in a press release that the lack of a new iPad from Apple hurt the market. “With no new iPads, the market slowed for many vendors, and that’s likely to continue into the third quarter,” said IDC analyst Tom Mainelli. “However, by the fourth quarter we expect new products from Apple, Amazon and others to drive impressive growth in the market.” On August 29, IDC cut its 2013 forecast slightly from 229.3 million to 227.4 million tablet shipments. In other words, the tablet market now is experiencing similar dynamics to the PC industry, where much of the growth falls in the second half of the year. Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes wrote in a research note that sales of the iPad “clearly have the flu.” Apple shipped 14.6 million iPads in the fiscal third quarter, well below the 18 million he expected. “The market has really suffered from a lack of new and compelling devices.” According to Citi Research analyst Glen Yeung, the desktop PC market took 12 years to mature and hit saturation in developed markets in 2008. The laptop market took 10 years to mature in 2012. Research firm Gartner said that global mobile phone sales grew 3.6% in the second quarter, and smartphone units surpassed so-called feature phones for the first time. Nevertheless, analysts covering Samsung and Apple question whether the two mobile market leaders can maintain profit margins and have expressed doubt that they will be able to launch new devices that are enticing enough to offset buyer fatigue. Sales of Samsung’s Galaxy S4 phone didn’t live up to initial expectations. Meanwhile, Apple on Tuesday introduced the latest upgrade to the iPhone, the 5S, along with a new lower-cost model, the 5C. With its $99 price tag for a 16GB model, Apple is hoping the 5C — which is made of plastic and comes in five colors– will put the phone within reach of consumers in fast-growing emerging markets. The 5S, meanwhile, includes an upgrade to an A7 chip and is the first smartphone based on a high-performance 64-bit architecture. It also comes in three colors — silver, gold and “space gray.” Wharton management professor David Hsu agrees. “The underlying question is: What functionality is unique and can push consumers to upgrade? Upgrading just for incremental improvement isn’t as compelling.” Werbach points out that although smartphones and tablets have been refined in recent years, they have fallen short of any breakthrough uses. “The first few years of smartphones and tablets were about software innovation, and then the development of cloud-based systems tied to the devices,” he notes. “There has been significant refinement since then, but today’s devices basically have the same functionality that Apple first delivered when it added the App Store to the second-generation iPhone.” According to Knowledge@Wharton technology and media editor Kendall Whitehouse, screen size might be the most critical differentiator for consumers. “The middle ground [in screen sizes] is where the market challenges will be.” The smartphone is highly portable and will continue to do well, Whitehouse predicts. Apple’s iPhone 5C will be on sale starting Friday, and the 5S model is available for pre-order starting September 20. An Apple television set also has been long rumored. “Apple has created so many product waves, one has to wonder whether it can continue to do so,” says Whitehouse. Barclays’ Reitzes argued in a research note that Apple should concentrate its iPad sales efforts on corporations to hold market share against Samsung and a bevy of inexpensive Android tablets. According to Reitzes, Apple’s tablet already has traction in corporations, and if it could develop more business use, the company would have a more stable base for its device. Meanwhile, Apple’s rival, Samsung, has its own concerns. Competition from Chinese smartphone makers ZTE, Huawei and Lenovo are cutting into the firm’s profits. “Samsung and Apple both have to worry about the ‘Dell problem,’” says Hsu. Hot items like flat-screen televisions also become more expensive closer to Christmas, Decide's data found. The best holiday-season time to buy a flat-screen television is in October, says Mike Fridgen, Decide's chief executive. The average price of a Samsung 46-inch "Professional" LCD television was $1,159 in October, according to Decide. On Black Friday, the same TV's average price was $1,355, the data found. The same goes for almost any hot item and popular toys. Buying early could help you snag an item before prices rise as supplies become tight. The price of a Sesame Street Elmo plush toy increased 31% to $17.78 on Black Friday from its average in September and October, according to Decide's data. The late-season price increases for toys that turn into hits can be dramatic. Ron Brawer, a partner at toy maker Maya Group Inc., recalls that his $29.99 Orbeez "Soothing Spa" toy was sold for as much as $90 during last year's holiday season as online retailers raised the price when supplies became limited. "It was crazy," Mr. Brawer says. "They spent three times as much for something than if they would have bought it three weeks earlier." For other items, it pays to wait until closer to Christmas. Several of the biggest retailers are extending their opening hours even more than in previous years to try to one-up their competition. The deals listed by retailers are as big as ever. Home Depot, Target, Wal-Mart, and Best Buy, among others, are selling popular items at discounts of 30% or more off their regular price. Retailers plan to sell laptops, HDTVs, and other products at several hundred dollars off. Consulting with several groups that compile Black Friday deals, 24/7 Wall St. identified some of the products with the biggest markdowns. Retailers usually offer the best deals on already established products. For example, several big box stores offer considerable rollbacks on the 50" HDTVs because they have been on the market for several years. Fatwallet.com's Brent Shelton explained, "A couple of years ago, the bigger screens with the lighter technology were still new. But last year, prices really came down as they became less of a novel item." Many other products offered with significant markdowns are either being phased out and replaced with a new product type or improved versions of the same model. This is the case with laptops, for example. "With laptops, particularly the medium-level laptops, retailers discount them because people are turning to tablets as their general surf-communication device," Shelton said. Laptops can therefore be very good deals for students who don't care about having a tablet, he added. Despite the many holiday deals, it's probably not the best time to buy some products. Holiday decorations and winter clothing tend to be more expensive now than any time of year because most stores have just put them in stock. There are also products that tend to have better deals during other holidays. For example, the biggest deals for tools tend to be during Father's Day. We've just been on a whirlwind of drugstore dates with some of our favorite beauty pros, whose most trusted tools often lie hidden in those endless shelves: "Mass-market brands are typically the ones with the biggest budgets for research and development," says New York City makeup artist Kristofer Buckle, who sandwiched our shopping trip between shoots with Sheryl Crow and Christina Aguilera. By encouraging more focused collaboration among multiple functional groups (notably marketing and sales, operations, engineering/R&D, and procurement), these leaders are combining deep insights about customers, competitors, and supply bases to strip out costs and amplify what customers truly value. The results—including better products, happier customers, higher margins, and, ultimately, a stronger ability to innovate—should serve these organizations well in years to come. It had long been among the top leading players in the company’s home country—an emerging market—but was now losing domestic share in two important, and fiercely competitive, product categories. The company’s leaders suspected that a stagnant product portfolio was partly to blame; they had been focusing a considerable amount of attention on operations and had neglected to revisit fan designs for a couple of years. Meanwhile, an innovative upstart, also from an emerging market, had begun competing with the manufacturer, both at home and in developed markets. The threat served as a wake-up call: establishing a stronger platform for growth, the executives realized, would require the company to step up its product-development capabilities while maintaining—or even improving upon—its low-cost edge. Focus on the customer The company started by conducting focus groups and ethnographic research aimed at identifying unmet needs among middle-income (and aspiring middle-income) families in emerging markets. As these approaches started generating concepts for new products, the company ran surveys that forced consumers to choose between various product features and price points and then used conjoint analysis to discern how much customers were willing to pay for various options. Its results were intriguing. For example, the ethnographers observed that middle-class aspirants in urban areas hated how dirty the blades of typical ceiling fans became after prolonged use. Conjoint analysis showed that some of these consumers would pay a premium for models that were easier to clean. Similarly, the work identified profitable niches for fans with built-in, rechargeable batteries (to be used in case of power outages), as well as portable models for families that wanted one fan to serve several purposes—say, venting cooking odors in the kitchen and personal use elsewhere in the house. By seeing how different models stacked up, the executives hoped to spark fresh thinking in the team that would improve the new designs and also to help determine whether competing products had unexpected cost or technological advantages. The exercise helped the company to meet both its goals. Purchasers and product engineers, for instance, believed that it was already striking the right balance between quality and price in its materials and components. Yet the teardown showed that as compared with competitors, the company was “overbuilding” its products significantly and that identical—or even better—product performance was possible at a lower cost if the team was willing to rethink its design approaches. Some of the resulting design changes were quite straightforward and even, in retrospect, obvious. Yet the team acknowledged that the new ideas didn’t click until the teardown, when the evidence was spread out on the table for discussion. By modifying the cover of one type of household fan, for example, the team made it unnecessary to include an internal bracket assembly that had supported the original cover—a savings of 7 percent per unit. This change, like most cost-saving opportunities the team identified, was invisible to customers and didn’t matter to them (for an example of one model, see diagram). Many of the individual cost-saving opportunities the team identified were small. But the collective impact was huge—helping the company to reduce the total cost of manufacturing its fans by more than 10 percent, against a cost base that was already quite competitive. These articles or products make a public health claim that goes beyond the preservation of the treated article itself. EPA requires the submission of chemical data in support of the public health labeling claims and patterns of use of the product. If EPA determines that such a product is exempt from registration as a pesticide, the product may claim only that it contains a pesticidal preservative to protect the product itself. These pesticides are known as materials preservatives. In these cases, the pesticide is registered for the intended use, and the sole purpose of treatment is to protect the product itself. These pesticides are widely used in the manufacture of textiles, plastics, paper, adhesives, and coatings. It allows an exemption for: An article or a substance treated with or containing a pesticide to protect the article or substance itself (for example, paint treated with a pesticide to protect the paint coating, or wood products treated to protect the wood against insects or fungus infestation), if the pesticide is registered for such use. EPA grants the treated articles exemption for a non-public-health use of a pesticide that is intended to protect only the treated article or substance itself. Consumers may distinguish such products by the absence of the EPA's pesticide registration number (found on the product label) of the registered pesticide used for protecting the article itself. It should be noted here that the EPA registration number would also be absent from an illegal product that should be registered. But when order was restored and the cards began reading properly, it became clear that some customers were out to take advantage of the taxpayer-funded program. One woman had $700 worth of merchandise in her cart and an EBT card with a balance of just 49 cents. The glitches, which were apparently triggered by a a system failure at Xerox, which handles processing for many states, left other users unable to buy anything. At a Mississippi Walmart, customers rioted and even left the store with groceries without paying after they were unable to use their food stamp cards on Saturday, according
